Unicompartmental Knee Replacement

What is unicompartmental knee replacement?

It is a surgical procedure where only one knee compartment (mainly the medial) is replaced. The remaining articular surfaces and ligaments, such as the anterior cruciate ligament, are preserved.

What are the indications?

It is indicated for localised osteoarthritis of only one knee compartment (side) with intact ligaments. This usually applies to patients with good mobility and without significant knee deformity.

Differences from total knee replacement and advantages?

More bone is preserved compared to total joint replacement, and the knee feels more “natural.” It also involves a smaller surgical incision and faster rehabilitation. However, it is not the appropriate treatment for cases with extensive disease.

What is the duration of the procedure?

The procedure lasts approximately 1–2 hours. It depends on the patient’s anatomy and physical condition.

What type of anesthesia will be administered?

There are different types of anesthesia, and your anesthesiologist will explain them in detail. There are two main types of anesthesia:

  1. spinal
  2. general anesthesia

How many days will I stay in the hospital?

Most patients will need to stay in the hospital for one to two days, with the majority of patients being discharged the day after surgery.
