Total Knee Replacement
What is it?
It is the most common surgical procedure for treating knee osteoarthritis. During a knee replacement, the surgeon replaces the damaged surfaces of your knee with new, smooth surfaces made of metal and plastic.
Why do I need a total knee replacement?
Osteoarthritis is the most common reason for knee replacement. This condition destroys the cartilage and roughens the bone surfaces. As a result, it causes pain during movement, and also reduces the joint’s range of motion.
What is the lifespan of the prostheses?
There is no defined lifespan for prostheses. Revision procedures are rarely needed, primarily due to infection or fracture. Research shows that implants last less in younger patients. However, even at young ages, over 90% of total knee replacements are still functional 10-20 years after surgery.
How many days will I be in the hospital?
Most patients will need to stay one to two days in the hospital, with the majority of patients being discharged the day after surgery.
What type of anesthesia will be used?
There are different types of anesthesia, and your anesthesiologist will explain them in detail. There are two main types of anesthesia:
- spinal
- general anesthesia
How long does the surgical procedure last?
The surgical procedure itself usually lasts one hour. However, you will be in the operating room for a longer period for the administration of anesthesia and for recovery after the procedure.
Sports and exercise after surgery?
Regular exercise is vital for your recovery. Walking is excellent exercise for the first few weeks. Swimming is very good exercise, once the wound has healed. Cycling is also a good form of exercise, but getting on and off the bicycle may be difficult at first.
